Chapter 04 · Character companion

Dressmaker game characters

Every client in Twillford, what their cards ask for, and how their stories pay out.

Dressmaker’s cast is its client list: ten townspeople bring the story’s seventy-five commission cards between them, and finishing a client’s cards completes their arc. Two spirits and a handful of never-dressed townsfolk round out Twillford.

The ten clients at a glance

The whole cast, before the detail. Counts and budgets below are transcribed from two community references — the Dressmaker Wiki’s client pages and Tpose Gaming’s character list — both checked 3 October 2026; where they disagree, we say so.

The clients, one by one

Short notes below; each client has her own page with the full card table, requirements, measurements and story.

Rose — the Twillford librarian, clutching a book

Rose

The librarian, and your first customer

Rose works at the Twillford library and brings the opening card of the game: Librarian Workwear, which asks only for a professional dress of quality 60 or better — the gentlest brief you will receive. Her later cards quietly teach the rest of the system: a warm layer for cold late shifts, a linen-and-wool conference dress, and a gravedigging outfit that must stay simple and avoid white.

Her life keeps leaking into the commissions. The wiki notes mice eating her clothes, and her Rodent Relations card asks for something cute, playful and largely pink; her late-story Both of Us? pays 2,500 for a cotton-only dress.

Prudence Mortimer — character portrait

Prudence Mortimer

A well-off widow, and not remotely prudent

Prudence asks you to close the shop while she orders, so no other Twillford woman can catch the Duke’s eye in your dresses. Her opening card is a funeral dress that must be elegant and glamorous — and must avoid black.

Nine cards follow her swings: floral romance with flower accessories, a secretly cute gallery visit, the deliberately humble Not Haughty, the all-black Never the Bride at 1,500, and her late Painted Dream at 3,000.

Lady Priya Summer — character portrait

Lady Priya Summer

A noblewoman with a gothic eye and a lost brother

Priya arrives with the strictest of the three funeral briefs: Fierce Funeral accepts nothing but black, formal and gothic. The community wiki ties her story to a lost brother, and her cards run from that stern opening through an exhibition, a flower-filled retreat and a largely blue maid-of-honour dress.

Her romantic side takes over late: constellation-themed cards end with Sewn in the Stars at 3,000, while Potential Fratricide — warm, at least three colours — sits somewhere inside the family story.

Marie Laroche — character portrait

Marie Laroche

Home from the Charmeuse embassy

Marie grew up in Tulleton and spent eight years at the embassy in Charmeuse before coming to Twillford to help her parents move. Her opening card, Respectful Funeral, is the demure middle path of the Duke’s funeral: black over half the dress, formal, elegant, simple.

Her taste runs colour-ward — she says women from Charmeuse favour colourful, patterned clothing, and her later cards ask for exactly that, from Goat Mediation to a picnic. Her wedding dress pays 2,500, and finishing her seven cards earns the achievement G.O.A.T.

Edith Swan — character portrait

Edith Swan

A former opera singer with a biographer at her heels

Edith’s first card is the interview dress — daywear with a brooch — and her second a feathered Phoenix Costume. Eight cards keep her in glamour: elaborate, sequinned, increasingly risky, peaking with Another Encore at 1,500 and World Stage at 1,250.

Her story touches the rest of the town too: a warm, elegant graveside visit after the funeral, and Cat Amongst Pigeons, whose only demand is five or more feathers.

Dorothy Parker — character portrait

Dorothy Parker

Pigeon keeper and town gossip

Dorothy keeps three named pigeons and knows everyone’s business. Her first card is an audition — Pigeon Adoption — and once the pigeon adopts you, further commissions start arriving by mail. The wiki notes that delivering that first card earns its own achievement, You’ve Got Mail.

Nearly every Dorothy card wants Eclectic: camouflage in a hedge, a half-purple gala gown, a detective dress in wool, and Extraterrestrial Entreaty, which asks for at least 5% of all seven fabrics in a single dress.

Fiona — character portrait

Fiona

The farmer

Fiona’s eight cards are the game’s bright patch: a cute, playful vegetable-empire dress in three or more colours, a patterned walking billboard, her beloved ox in professional bows, then baking, floristry and a reporter’s suit in grey, black or brown.

The outlier is Opera Night — romantic, cute, eveningwear, five bows and ten centimetres of lace trim — which pays 750 and, judging by its name, connects her to Edith Swan’s world.

Alice Wren — character portrait

Alice Wren

A student followed by two spirits

Alice does not come alone: two spirits talk over her commissions, and she stays gothic on every one of her six cards — lace for studying, a white-only labyrinth of love, and Raven Rising, an evening gown restricted to black, blue and green.

Late in her story the spirits themselves commission dresses: Selafie wants something cute in pink and white with bows, Kroq demands red-and-black velvet fit for world domination, and Spirit of Compromise balances both sides at 35 points each. The spirits keep no friendship row and no achievement of their own.

Lady Vivian Duskbourne — character portrait

Lady Vivian Duskbourne

A night owl with expensive taste

Vivian opens at 700 — the richest first card until Adora arrives. Velvet is counted on two of her seven cards, one dress must be pure silk (Comfortable Coffin), and her art-gallery card asks for more glamour than any other card in the game.

Unstained Beauty is red-only so stains won’t show, and Dark Emissary pays 1,250. One of her conversations hides a missable achievement — take the leech option when the talk turns to animals.

Adora Thimblethread — character portrait

Adora Thimblethread

A newcomer trained in five sports

Adora is certain of her athletics and much less sure of everything else. She opens at 1,000 and her cards only climb: a secret-art-critic evening dress at 1,500, a sequinned heist, a white-and-grey stargazing dress, and two budgets of 2,000.

Her coronation dress, Crowning Glory, carries the largest budget on any card in the game: 5,000, for quality 95, elaborate 80, formal 80, yellow and white quarters, trim and lace besides.

Stories, budgets, achievements

One funeral, three dresses

The story opens around the death of the Duke of Twillford — a man you never dress. Three of your first clients order funeral dresses for it, and their briefs could hardly differ more. Prudence’s Flamboyant Funeral must avoid black entirely; Priya’s Fierce Funeral accepts nothing but black; Marie’s Respectful Funeral wants black over half the dress and nothing showy. One event, three characters — and a compact lesson in how the game’s style tags pull against each other.

What the budgets tell you

First cards pay modestly — 200 to 500, with the three funeral dresses at 300 each. But the early clients come back with much bigger asks: Rose’s cotton-only Both of Us? pays 2,500, Prudence’s Painted Dream and Priya’s Sewn in the Stars pay 3,000 each, and Marie’s wedding dress 2,500. Meanwhile each newcomer arrives richer than the last — Alice opens at 250, Vivian at 700, Adora at 1,000 — until Adora’s coronation card peaks at 5,000, the largest budget on any card. The practical reading: an early client’s taste vocabulary stays relevant long after their introduction.

Story achievements

Every client has a story achievement for completing all of their major commissions. Five names and their Steam unlock rates are recorded by the wiki — Marie’s G.O.A.T. (1.4% of players), Dorothy’s Snitches Get Stitches (1.8%), Alice’s Caw Evermore (2.2%), Vivian’s Good Girl Gone Vlad (1.1%) and Adora’s Go Off, Queen! (1.3%) — rates that suggest few players finish a full client arc. Vivian’s conversations also hide the missable Sucker for Punishment: take the leech option when it appears.

Client measurements

The game lists three measurements for each client. The set below is transcribed from the Tpose Gaming list; it has not been checked against the game itself, and neither source states the unit — treat the numbers as listed values, not real-world sizes.

Friendship stars and gifts

The Sketchbook keeps a Friendships page with a row of five stars for each of the ten clients; people you have not met appear as ???. A finished commission adds a star, and each client’s page fills in a Personal style as you learn it — Rose’s shows Professional and Simple after her first two dresses. The wiki also tracks gift-giving alongside the stars, and notes that no romance option has turned up in the game.

Beyond the ten clients

Two kinds of people in Twillford never sit for a fitting. The first: Alice’s spirits, Selafie and Kroq — each commissions a dress, but they keep no friendship row and no achievement. The second: the townsfolk the clients talk about, from the late Duke to Dorothy’s pigeons (Berty among them, the pigeon whose adoption is her first card) and Mina. The wiki gathers these on its Twillford page rather than the client list.

Questions

How many characters are in the Dressmaker game?

Ten commission clients, plus two spirits with briefs of their own. Everything else — the Duke, Berty, Mina — is townsfolk you hear about but never dress.

Are a character’s commissions the same for every player?

Both references list fixed thresholds and budgets per card, so the briefs appear set; the design choices within them are yours.

Is there romance in Dressmaker?

No romance option has been documented. The friendship stars and gifts described above are as close as it gets, according to the wiki’s FAQ.

Which character pays the most?

Adora Thimblethread. Her coronation card, Crowning Glory, carries a 5,000 budget — the largest on any card in the game.
